We decided on a theme, posters, and a brochure and since it would be nice to jump right into making the posters for the next meeting (or earlier if we need them for an outreach opportunity), I’d like to have members send me the wording they want for their poster (if they volunteered to take one), and I will print them out in the same fonts and sizes for a uniform look. Then we can cut and tape them on.
We still volunteers to take a poster (see below), and we also thought that some of our more artistic members could make some artwork for the posters: drawings of coops, chickens, anything that would liven up the posters. We can also draw on some background before we tape the words/content on as well, so it isn’t a plain white background. There’s plenty of work for everyone
And finally, to help keep things organized, I made a Poultry page on the East Hills website which I can keep updated as needed:
Theme and Materials for Small Animal Field Day
Theme: What Makes for a Happy Chicken? (or some variation thereof)
1. Posters – we need posters for either the walls or to hang on the table, and after a little bit of brainstorming, we came up with 4 categories:
a. Food and treats: – EL, ML, HL
– – Mash or pellets (from pet store)
– – Calcium supplement
– – Cracked corn (food or treat?)
– – greens and vegetable scraps
– – treats: mealworms, etc.
b. Protected Space at night – needs a volunteer
– – coop
– – private laying boxes
– – protection from predators
– – roosting bar
c. Space for day – needs a volunteer
– – run or time in a yard
– – pecking, dust baths
– – finding insects and eating greenery
d. Happy Neighbors – LB
– – roosters
– – distance of coop from windows
– – keeping chickens from escaping
2. Brochure – RW will start work on this
We didn’t have time to brainstorm too much about this one, but some of the ideas include:
– – recipe for chicken cookies
– – beginning information for someone interested in owning chickens (websites, etc.)
3. A game
This is a tough one, and some of the ideas we came up with include:
– – a memory game with chickens and eggs
– – a treasure hunt/solve a puzzle/answer a question game with stops on the floor
– – throwing game, where you throw a beanbag and answer a question
– – spin the wheel game where you answer questions for a prize
4. Bookmarks
We will use the old bookmarks from the previous Poultry project, and I’ll make sure the information is updated and accurate.
5. We also discussed the idea of selling chicken cookies, or maybe frozen Dubia (a type of beetle that chickens love).
